So, I hear Facebook, YouTube and other social networking sites are open to some MAJCOMs now.
USAFE is, apparently, behind the curve, which means Airmen in Europe will actually be working a little while longer.
I’m curious – which bases have opened these sites so far?
-Farva

Nellis social networking is up and running. On Youtube right now watching some top gear actually.
Whats everyone think about this?
I’m watching the episode where it’s revealed that the Stig is Michael Schumacher. LOVE IT.
If you are a fan of Top Gear or the game Battlefield 2 here is a cool spoof vid on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnzvf85UMAQ
Top Gear, yes. Video games, no. Thanks anyways.
I liked how here at Nellis the Network went down for about an hour and a half yesterday…probably overloaded with Youtube downloads.
First to mention that Osan AB has access to above mentioned sites. This is going to last for about 2 weeks…
we get em at Hickam. supposedly they’re using certain majcoms as “test” bases, to see what impact it will have, so you gotta be careful not to abuse it. my boss already tore me a 3rd 1 in the first 2 mins i was logged on to facebook, even though they encourage us to use them….
whatya gonna do?
they encourage official usage of it
this is suppose to be for PA and also for those squadrons who post news for airmen on facebook… yeah some squadrons posts events and such on facebook lol!
Terrible idea. Facebook is enough of a time-sucking blackhole (sts) off duty, without being able to get to it on base. I know we’re trying to be tech savy and modern, but this isn’t the way, IMO.
Many many companies in the private sector function just fine without restricting access to the Internet. The key is trusting your employees / airmen to do their job instead of spending all day on Facebook / other sites…
Horrible STS usage
Charleston is up and running. Although it is suprising since when it comes to COMM we are usually last to know what is going on. Nice Toaster.. reminds me of Groundhog Day.
enjoying it at charleston
Its definitely up and running out in Korea. Osan, to be more specfic.
III MEF and KAB in Okinawa can get at them. Seems foolish to me (I need to get at facebook at work, why?), but it’s nice to be able to get my yahoo and aol email at work, since I have no webs at home right now (fiber install comes on Saturday! And there was much rejoicing)
It’s up and running on Kadena.
It’s open here at Goodfellow.
At AAFES, of course not, nor will it.
IMHO.
why not?! if anyone should have it AAFES should. i wouldnt be surprised if theres a facebook group concerned with AAFES. good research opportunity…plus discounts for people who become a fan
I think aafes has a facebook page and other stuff, but employees are blocked from going to social networking sites. At least AFBlues is not blocked!
there’s an aafes sucks facebook page, too, lol. truly, though, what moron employee would post there? i’m on facebook, but super-careful not to discuss work in any way. i wish they had an option for “public” and “private” profiles.
“plus discounts for people who become a fan”
I don’t know which is more ludicrous – the idea of AAFES offering discounts or the idea of people being fans of them…
haha touche. agreed, ridiculous scenario, but what if….i can dream cant I?
I do see on the facebook page, at fort lee, free prescreening of Iron Man 2 Thursday if you RSVP thru there
6271 fans?
are you sure its not a scam? mr. insider. they’re probly giving away popcorn too, but charging $25 for a small coke….
That’s what is on the facebook page. free tickets. yeah, but a small coke at ANY movie theater is $$$
I called my people. coke is free, but the cup, ice, and straw will be $25.
IMHO.
hahaha i knew there was something a-foot. in all honesty i decided to reply to your post to see how far out this little thread ladder will go. i’m at work, and pretty bored.
maybe if the ladder goes enough to the right, it will show up on crew dogs, and jump start that site!
another indent to the right.
@IKEA ACC..
I get the ACC, but wondering about the IKEA, Only IKEA I know is that department/furniture place, based in Dallas, even in Saudi Arabia.
Care to share your handle id?
yeah, i was a crewchief…TECHNICALLY still am, but im flyin a desk right now… IKEA=desk ACC=pilot.
also it wont go right anymore
@Rob
IKEA is Swedish origin,Dutch managed. Sometimes even us Texans have to give others credit for good ideas!
I’m not understanding your use of IMHO…..
any posting where I reference AAFES is IMHO, In My Humble Opinion, and not theirs. legal disclaimer for me.
Kunsan is up and running but then again PACAF was the test area for the social networking thing. The rest of the commands are supposed to start implementing in May. There is an article about it (with ammusing comments) on the AF Portal.
Scott AFB and Mountain Home are up. Im still waiting to see how it will turn out.. I think it will only be a time waster if supervision is bad..
Wilford Hall at Lackland is up and running which is not going to help Barbie. :^O
Leave it to Minot to be relentlessly behind the social and popular curve
lol Malmstrom and minot will both be behind the times… its a given!
Don’t you know fun is against the rules in the 20th AF…
Would anyone of us stuck in the Remote Prairie Outpost think that we’d get it?
Think of it: 30 missileers, on alert, on Facebook.
Sounds like a recipe for failure on my end.
No worries, Eglin is still anti-Facebook….as of this afternoon.
we get facebook and youtube at USAFA – but not Myspace
McGuire has it. I’ve already made jokes on my account about people’s tax dollars at work. **lol** I’ve only checked my account three times at work. I do all my online damage at home.
Farva, any chance that you’d make a bunch of different headshots like the ones posted on the main page, for use as avatars?
You mean of my characters, or what?
LOL, you forgot the STS
Hmmm… I don’t see the need.
I fail to see the STS need also. Calling foul on that one. Yeah, I was talking about the headshots of your characters.
you may have to re-teach everyone sts usage
Not a deployed location X yet, but we keep trying
Talked to our Comm guys this morning and they said the push has to come from Shaw, so anyone working at Shaw in Comm, hook us up because there is NOTHING to do here…well, other than work
Travis has it and I’ve already seen an Amn change their FB status to “I’m bored” and one of the NCO’s in the shop posted the comment “Go clean the bathrooms”. This has bad idea written all over it!
YES!!!
Nice!
We can now use those sites here @ luke.
no workie @ eglin as of 3pm CDT
Dover has the social sites, but youtube only lasted about 2 days.
Grand Forks is up and running along with the base having its’ own Facebook page.
GFAFB’s Auto Skills has it’s own FB page. So does the Library and the Arts and Crafts. EVEN the GFAFB Dominos has it’s own FB page.Oh! And don’t forget the random GFAFB Disc Golf Association page.
I should send Farva some money for a Gravatar portrait.
Hopefully the bathroom has a GFCI, so that Barbie may live to see dinner with Dahrt.
If not the breaker could always trip… Imagine him just sitting there with a toaster just floating by expecting to be dead
Army bases have been allowing them for about a year now
I believe all of PACAF allows it now. Misawa I think was one of the last and we got it last friday.
Langley is up and running..
Not sure if they have it up and running at McChord but yeah, I don’t think it’s a good idea….all of our activites are already monitored as is, why open up your facebook page to that an risk something sending up a red flag and next thing you know you are in with OSI….I know, a bit of a slippery slope, but I think in the end it’s too much of a distraction from the job at hand and it will end up biting people in the ass
Its working at Schriever
Vandenberg is good to go, Facebook is working fine. My brother is at the Pentagon working for the CNO and he has had access to Facebook for a while now. I think he does some of the updating for the CNO’s page though.
Toaster in the shower? Nice, I’m sure the electrical outlets are EFCI though.
Nothing out here at the Died…..Sucks but wouldnt expect them to offer it to us deployed folks…..
I’ll let you know in a day or so if the AOR out in Middle East allows it. But I’ll bet the answer is a resounding ‘NO’.
It’s up at Scott. I don’t see myself using it much, as doing my actual work usually takes me until well after “quitting time,” so any time wasted during the day is even more time spent at work in the evening
yeah tell me about it :S
Remember those days too.
Misawa has them, along with policy letters strictly limiting their use. The trick with a dangled carrot is that there’s always a string attached.
OPSEC disclosures is bad enough as it is. Allowing social networking access is a bomb that just hasn’t gone off yet. I doubt it will be authorized for long.
got to agree. I have had too many people given paperwork for misuse of internet while on government official time.
Save social networking for off duty, and on your personal account, and, especialiy if AD, think about what you are posting.
I’ve seen way too many folks post deployment info on FB. Allowing access to it on “Government Time” is just begging for trouble!
Umm…I don’t get it…Or am I trying to read too much into the the toaster??
I guess I’m saying if he’s just electrocuting himself there are funnier ways to show it.
Someone explain??
Congrats C/Maj Mcclure, you and I the only ones to focus on the strip (STS?) thus far.
Can’t see Barbie going thru with it.
Something deep with Dahrt (STS?) obviously.
It’s just a joke…stop reading into it and take it for face value….too many STS’s….
Luke is up and running, and I’m pretty sure everybody else in AETC is as well. Should be interesting, but if I get stuck waiting in line at finance or whatever because some airman is busy on Facebook during work hours, it’s going to get ugly.
McChord is up and running, and I’m sure Big Brother is watching. If they can have a guy at the Comm squadron at the Zoo whose sole job is to find upperclassmen who “friend” smacks (FRAT!!!!!, apparently), then the good man above knows what Cyber-Command can do.
Tyndall has access to Facebook and YouTube, I know a few people who have already tried Farmville and MafiaWars but no luck there (which is good IMO)
Idk. It would be funnier if he had jumper cables or something…
@Farva have any insight?
Reality is Barbie is more afraid of going to the BX then dinner with Capt Dahrt. But, I just speculate. Now, if the toaster was bought at the BX, he will survive.
IHMO, and hope I still have a job in the morning!
Insight into why I used a toaster? I guess ’cause it’s the classic cliche “drop it in the tub for a quick way out” appliance. I don’t think jumper cables would have been as funny because he’d have to connect them to something, and while bathrooms usually have electrical outlets, they don’t often have running vehicles. IDK, it worked for Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, and he knows funny a helluva lot better than me…
i dont understand the confusion here (no offense RobertM) i thought it was hilarious. its classic off yourself, as well as classic sarcasm for offing yourself…sts? not sure…judges?
What is it with Bill Murray and Toasters? I immediately thought of Carol Kane wacking him on the jaw with a toaster in “Scrooged.”
I thought it was pretty clear as to why the toaster was used.
Yea seriously I need you to grow a funny bone. The toaster is hilarious. Jumper cables????? Really?
McChord is logged on to the Facebook Revolution. Like we didn’t waste enough time as it was…
Sheppard allows access now but I don’t trust it. The way I see it the AF needs to drop 6,000 +/- people. The PT program isn’t doing it fast enough and there are not enough volunteers. When ever you log into a GOV computer everything you do is monitored and/or recorded. You agree to it when you click on those pop ups at login. We know people will misuse this so what better way then to get people to “volunteer” to be discharged by opening up these sites? I wonder how long it will be until re read about some Airman being booted for facebook or youtube?
Hmm…It might be time for me to give them business again (STS). Despite the crap AAFES gets its still cheaper for pretty much all CAP cadets to make a run to the local base, buy a boatload of gear, and bring it back.
I need new sunglasses too…Hmm…
good luck getting the standard gold frame pilot AO shades I have worn for years. (CAP. JROTC, AFROTC, USAF, GA) discontinued. Silver only now. I had to go direct to AO for my current pair, twice the price. ug.
There is a reason for that long time design, UV, fits in headsets, flips up/down easily inflight.
Scott Guard was not last week. ASAB was in 08.
Wait Really? DANG IT. cuz i lost my last pair…
really. pissed me off. used to buy new pair of the classic gold AO pilot glasses thru aafes every time I got a new rating, about $20. Last pair. $45 direct from AO.
Up at Lackland. I’ve already talked to my NCOs about making sure the Airmen (including them…) aren’t spending all day on YouTube and Facebook.
Dang. Long story but my original pair ended up on the wing of another glider…and they got chipped a little. Got the bendy wires that wrapped around the ears (great during preflight inspections, they don’t fall off), and those…dissapeared. And I really prefered the gold rims too…
OK, lose the bendy wires.. you want the straight arms. fit on top of the david clark’s helps the noise blockage, and flip up and down as needed.
google american optical or add dots below
www aoeyewea com/Flight_Gear/original_pilot_frames.htm
and, during preflights, shades off, you want to see clearly, as you inspect. Just my CFI input.
as a preflight veteran i WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with that statement. only thing that sucks is looking up during a walkaround (tank vent holes, lights and such) but a simple hand-visor-action can cover that brief inconvenience.
thanks for educating our youngins
Elmendork was one of the first for it to open up on… but just as a warning… if you use a personal system from work you surrender your password and monitoring of your account by the goverment… IOW: if not logging into an air force account… I wouldnt do it … the comm guys at elmendork found out about the new features the same time users did here…. it was awesome to imagine their jaws drop
We had that discussion here (Osan) a couple days back. You don’t surrender anything – you can be monitored while on FB at a government computer, but they can’t just start monitoring your page 24/7 because you logged in one time from work.
Just keep in mind, that anything you do from work can be seen, logged, and used against you.
even as a younger airman, and facebook/youtube junkie, i know allowing these sites is going to cause a world of trouble. its inevitable. however i will say, it came in handy because my wife is as bad with FB as i am, and since my coworker was on the phone, and i cant have a cell in my office, i was able to log on real quick and let her know i’d be home late. so it’s not all bad, just mostly…
I think this can be a good thing with a bunch of potential bad factors. Use it responsibly, and remember, everything you do on a Gov’t computer can, and probably will be on social media, monitored. It should be this way anyway, but before you access social media sites on DoD systems, make SURE there is nothing you wouldn’t your CoC all over. And for the love of all things holy in the world, think OPSEC and don’t screw up.
It’s not a question of whether or not Airmen in general can handle it. I think the majority of Air Force members have no problems being basically responsible. It’s just that in every flight, squadron, etc. there is often one (or a few) “problem children” who simply cannot be trusted to not let this stuff interfere with their duties. What it’s really going to come down to though, is how supervisors deal with the negative aspects when they occur. It seems entirely possible that leaders could either keep a few bad apples from ruining it for everyone, or accelerate the re-banning process.
We at McConnell have the sites. Although it was briefed at a squadron CC call that despite having access, we still shouldn’t be using them.
Funny my squadron didn’t have that briefing, give us time we will be the nerds using FB to set up meetings and events, oh wait that is b/c we are the nerds
we never had that brief either. what squadron are you in?
All we got is that we’re now being watched.
Jesus how many McConnell guys we got on here? I’m with MXS.
seems like a lot. i am in LRS.
Lol you might be one of the guys delivering parts to us all the time down in Hydro Shop.
not me man. i work over in the cops basement where orders are issued.
McConnell K9
Creech has facebook for sure……why we are allowed that but not email is beyond me……
You can get to email (like gmail) if you go to the main host page (yahoo.com->mail.yahoo.com or google.com-> Gmail tab). Typing in gmail.com will show up with an access denyed page.
Thanks for the advice…..still got the denied notice….. Got to love my T-mobile G1 and its internet. LOL
All the info you are looking for is on the AF portal pages (cyber tab). It was announced who was getting what the last week of April. I was prepping my shop with the “Don’t be stupid on Facebook” talks well before the release. They know the NCOs will be watching to see if they are sitting around on facebook and if they get caught extra work will follow.
http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123201643
Langley has joined the revolution. I can get on FB and YouTube from work.
My CC sent out a message last week letting us know (although I first find out from this website…go figure), he also warned that logging in lets Big Brother into your personal business “be mindful of OPSEC when posting.” Won’t post the exact link, but go to AF.MIL/socialmedia.asp
Has some good info on the “SNS” sites (leave it to the AF to make an acronym for everything!)
The classic toaster!
As for facebook, I already block higher ups from seeing my wall posts. If they want to see what is on there they best pay off one of the few airman that I have as a friend to login and show them. Not that there is anything interesting on it.
Oh and those pictures of drunk airman that are underage on facebook…. well it was nice knowing you. I can see managers checking Friday and Saturday nights on the actions of their airman.
We have it at Shaw, I think its just PACAF and ACC that authorized it so far. I didnt know we had it yet and came in yesterday morning and just thought Id try, lo and behold, Facebook, Myspace, AND Youtube…
*UPDATE* Myspace also works at Langley *UPDATE*
McConnell has all of that jazz. Thanks for the Gravatar Farva. It is pretty stinkin’ awesome!
For some reason the new gravator does not show up. it is only the old pic i had…
Clear your temp files and it will work.
i am going to sound dumb now, but i do not know how to do that with internet explorer. i only use google chrome or firefox at home.
never mind… figured it out.
Thank you Wiggity!
I don’t think it will be a big deal like everyone thinks. The first day it opened, I logged in, but since then, I only logged in once, and it was work related!
Hotmail and Facebook are up at Davis-Monthan. I haven’t checked any others yet.
Holloman AFB up and running, red 4 standing by.
Happy Star Wars day Farva.
Farva- Toaster was right on, I can see Barbie wanting to do this. Or maybe offering Dhart a shower instead. ;o)
Well, AF Space is up too, this is going to be bad, I can see it now.
Holy crap! I just checked and yes Shaw does have Facebook and YouTube… Why? Are they going to monitor us?
I can promise you 100% they will be.. And have been…
DM is up and running!!! I also found out some internet mail is open as well, for us it’s only Hotmail and not Yahoo for some crazy reason. But I’m glad they finally did open these up, its not going to hurt production, they said email was going to and look where we are today, we can’t function without it.
Goodfellow is up and running!
Randolph, as well as all AETC bases should be up and running. I don’t really agree with YouTube being unlocked, as if our network wasn’t slow enough already. However, I do kind of enjoy PhotoBucket being opened. Makes it much easier to view the help forums I need to access on a daily basis.
Patrick up and running on all these traps
Still a no-go here at Barkatraz.
Laughlin is up as of today. Well I didn’t log in as I have no reason or ability to post official AF stuff. But I can get to the home page.
Loving this story arc. I went back and looked at all the toons from #1 until today just for fun.
1. Dahl looks mega young with hair almost like a teenager, keep him bald!
2. Eye pupils seem bigger now than in the past (not nitpicking just an obs)
3. I saw where you have added a comment or two post hack. I saw a few toons that might need some clarificaton especially for newbies. For instance the neat toon you did following the Ft.Hood tragedy might need a comment. I realize you are busy just a thought.
FB YT access will end horribly much like the first try at a government travel card
VD
None of them are up here at Whiteman.. maybe it all depends on command.. kinda sounding like AFGSC isnt allowing it yet.
Eielson AFB has it….woo hooooo!
Geeze, the network at Nellis is sooo slow now!
Buckley has it and wow does it slow down the network
i’m not sure what the fuss over opsec is all about because the opsec threat is still there even if the AF doesn’t allow social networking at work. just because you can’t write it at work doesn’t mean you can’t write it at home or use your IPhone or what not to write it. as for the time waste thats up to the supervisors to enforce just like anything else besides there are plenty of other sites that aren’t blocked that plenty of time can be wasted on i can spend hours on wikipedia just reading the endless articles on everything. personally i’m tired of hearing everything wrong being blamed on socialnetworking blame the users who aren’t smart enough to not post their every last thought or action.
Where can I find the flash episodes?
Offutt has it now, as well.
We’ve got webmail here at Edwards now too. I find that a lot more useful that youtube and facebook. I wish that people would use the programs well (or get in trouble for abusing them) so they wouldn’t get yanked in the future. I just hope they only yank the ones that are getting abused.
Near and dear to your heart, Laughlin has it!!!!! Unfortunately, we have to have written permission from the OG/CC to be on it… -_-
We opened it up on Vandenberg last week. wasn’t happy about it but we did.
Now I see the inspiration for bailout… thanks for sharing your creativity here.
From what I hear it’s up at Hill as well, but can’t check as they like to do things right after I leave. will post in a few days what’s up over at Kirkuk.
We have access here at Buckley.
