I’ve had this idea written down for years, but my experience at the BX yesterday gave me the push I needed to finally draw it.
It wasn’t so much that they didn’t have what I was looking for in the electronics department – I’m used to that. It was when I saw one of their in-store advertisements on TV claiming “We’ve got all the electronics you want!” It stung just a little, because I’ve been going to the BX every day since last Tuesday and have seen them restock the Power Zone several times, and it seems they’ve gotten every single movie and video game except the one I’m looking for. What’s even more frustrating is I have to go in every day, because the one day I don’t try will be the day they get three copies, sell them all and never reorder. I’d buy it on Amazon, but the last time I did that, the BX literally had what I ordered on shelves the very next day.
I have to say I do appreciate AAFES over here because without them we’d have to order all our American stuff online, and on occasion they have what I want. There – I said it. In the States though, I’m not sure I see the point.
Red Dead Redemption, for those who are wondering. Not like I have time to play it, but it looks pretty cool.

Caveman noticed the “Alaskan Junk” storefront, which I assumed meant that in AK, the have gift stores with tons of AK stuff that noone from AK would buy. And I noticed the AAFES brand vacuum, which if like every other AAFES brand item, isnt worth the money spent. I was trying to funny, but I failed. I’ll try again tomorrow……..
It’s more so every store in Alaska has an Alaskan junk section, and I mean EVERY store. It’s kinda sad really, and it is also the same exact stuff in every store. The amount of souvenir shops in downtown Anchorage are also a bit insane, again, all carrying the same things.

I’ve seen some BXs that have a GameStop. Not here, though (grrrrr…)
We have a GameStop on base, and we still make it a point to travel to the one 20 minutes from base because it’s the only decent one in town.
This is very funny to me because I have an interview for AAFES electronics department tomorrow morning.
If I get the job Farva, come find me and I’ll tell them to order it for you.

Absolutely. One of the best sandbox games ever. You can completely ignore the story line (at least follow it till you get the lasso) and still have a blast. I’ve had it since Saturday and i’ve already put like 16 hours into it.

Last week, HQ BX had 5 vacuum’s on special, (no aafes brands, they dont make sucking machines, just sell sucking machines (STS) including orick, $300-$600! Hoover @ home depot 120, and it sucks just fine! (STS)
And, love the of the AAFES obselete long logo, the soon to be obselete star logo, and the new logo in the strip!!!

Best $79 a year I spend. Just can’t figure out why they won’t ship Pampers to APO’s. Those, and everything else, are cheaper than AAFES.
They won’t ship them to Alaska either.
AAFES is horrible at best at Ellsworth, if it’s not out of date, it’s over priced. The one upside is if no one buys then everyone can grab it on clearance. “Hold the line steady til it drops to 75% off!”

I just wait for the Red “75% off” sticker that they have to put on all the remaining items. Clearance doesn’t always mean you’re getting it on sale or for less, it just means the store your buy it from is giving you whatever they have left of that item. Funny how that all works.
I had an experience like this at Maxwell, but little did I know that Laughlin is worse!!!
When I was a defendant spouse at Misawa, it was April and I went to the BX looking for a bbq grill, typical AAFES. sold out!! Asked when the next shipment was due? Done for the year! A comment to the squadron AAFES rep who mentioned it at the advisory council, and a shocked “what” from the CV, well, bbq grills for everyone in a couple of weeks.
haha, I am at misawa now…they are never out of grills, I swear they keep em out during the winter months as well….
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I was in Misawa in ’77, and ’87-’89. AAFES was no different back then. SSDD!

What about that whole order through AAFES online and ship to you, or the store thing they do?
That really only works if they actually have it in their catalog… which I’ve found a lot of stuff that they don’t… and sadly, you can’t do that with furniture overseas… so I have to resort to what’s actually in the BX or check out the German stores.
But German furniture is so much nicer. Of course if memory serves a lot of that hardwood stuff is so ridiculously heavy you’ll max your weight allowance to come home. But its still such nice stuff.

I’ve been waiting for Phantasy Star 0 for the DS… so far no luck, I’m thinking I might have to go online for it.
I’ve also noticed, when looking at some of the desks, they have some on display, with a sign reading “None of this item in stock.” I’ll try to get a pic of it for posting. It’s been on the same 2-3 desks for a couple months now… I wonder at what point they’re going to just remove it from the floor, though it is somewhat amusing (if not also frustrating, because it happens to be the cheapest desks of the ones I actually like).
I stopped wasting money buying video games a while back. GameFly is the way to go. $15 a month, I play until I win, I send it back. If I reeeeeeallly like one, then I buy a used copy off eBay for $25.
Playing Borderlands right now – it’s a helluva lot of fun. Not terribly difficult, but entertaining and has a cool atmosphere. Red Dead Redemption is next in the queue.
I tried playing Red Dead last night, and it was terrible. I got it for the 360, and the thing kept glitching like crazy. I’d be riding my horse and all of a sudden I’d be under the map, or enemies I was supposied to defeat never popped out even though their blips were there on the minimap, or the screen would go dark in place of a cutscene and never come back. I really can’t understand why it’s glitching so damn bad…
One word: Microsoft.
No, no, it has bugs on the PS3 too. Not, ya know, any that GrabTheBird mentioned. The only bug I encountered was I completed one mission and it just got stuck instead of loading up the final cinematic. So I had turn it off and turn it back on and lost my progress so I had to redo that mission (but it was short and easy). Other than that, it’s only been visual bugs that might break immersion but they don’t break the game.
You just have bad luck, I think, GrabTheBird. On the bright side there’s supposed to be patches soon. Give it another go. Other than a few glitches it’s an awesome game.
Well I talked to a guy at Rockstar, and he told me that I probably just got a bad disc. I’m gonna return it for another copy and see how it goes.
I was surprised and shocked to find a Gamestop in our BX when I got back from deployment. Now the employees there know me very well. **chuckle** Makes things a whole lot easier to do pre-orders and then pick them up at lunch when they come in. No more driving out of my way after work to get a game.
But the funny thing is, all the Dead or Alive Paradise games sell out in the BX but none of the ones in the Gamestop have been touched. We’ve tossed around a few really bad jokes on that one.

They have a few copies here at Osan. I’ll pick up a copy and send it to you MPS. That way, by the time you get it, RDD 6 will already be out and you’ll be a retired Brigadier General. But hey, free shipping!

Don’t forget Academy. Exact same fishing pole at the BX and Academy. Actually more expensive at the BX, and not by just a little.
Farv, are you able to ask them to special order the game for you? Or, as others suggested, is it on the AAFES online website? I’ve found that the AAFES folks (and the DeCA folks too) are willing to help if you ask, but that might just be stateside or stores where they recognize my last name (I share it with an AAFES manager; until I went to college, this meant that I was typically shopping at the same store my dad ran… whatever, use every weapon you’re issued!)
