side note, I was at the Grand Prairie Army Reserve shoppete recentely. Out of SGT metal insignia. Plenty of SSGT and above rank. A MSGT told her, buy the SSGT insignia, then cut off the bottom rocker.

Not that the BX has restocked on 1 Lt either, though having seamstress or tailorshop just outside gate rip out old and append them ought to be an obvious given.
OTOH, Bert probably didn’t need the bribe.

I got lucky while in Bagram years ago. I got promoted to TSgt a week after my buddy got promoted to MSgt. I took his old stripes, problem solved!

Don’t you have to show Proof of Rank anymore to buy Insignia?
In my time to present from 80 on, I never had to show any proof to buy any insignia, just a ID, now CAC, saying you had exchange privleges. No questions asked. ????
Never got my ID checked for buying rank other than to see that I had exchange privileges. I did, however, get asked “Uh oh, did you get in trouble” once when I showed up in uniform to buy pin-on SrA stripes for one of my troops who was in ALS…
Nope, haven’t had to show proof to buy insignia. Makes sense, when you consider that sometimes folks buy the stuff for their co-workers (some people tend to avoid the BX like the plague….)

Back in the mid 80′s when the rank of Sgt still existed, I remember using a blue pen to color in the star on the SrA stripes. OK, time for a history lesson for you confused kids out there. The stars on the E-2 through E-4 SrA rank were subdued- you didn’t get the star the same color as the stripes until you were an E-4 Sgt. NCO status w/ more responsibility AND the same pay as a SrA. Good times, good times…
