When it first came out we called it the “Don’t Travel System”. After we got used to it, I could do orders quicker, select my own flights (including seat assignments), hotels and rental cars. The key is you have to use it on a regular basis. In 2007 I travelled to 27 different States, ALWAYS got paid within 72 hrs of submitting my voucher, and always paid off my GTC to the penny and kept the “change”. (NO I don’t work for finance or DTS, I’m retired now, but still use DTS for ITO’s as a JROTC instructor.)
Agreed, if you use it often, it’s not too terrible. The more you’re in there, the easier it is to navigate and know where to look for things. But for those that don’t travel often or have unusual travel situations, it’s a beast.
Incidentally, while DTS was nowhere in my new job’s Poistion Description, my previous experience with it has pretty much guaranteed that it has not only snuck into my new duties but may soon be playing a larger, much more complicated role in my life. I need to rememebr to leave that off my resume from now on!
BTW, don’t know if it was this week or last week’s Box D Blues (I’m a bit behind), but LOVED the UCI strip!
I came off AT on Thursday. Did DTS that afternoon (on the way home, actually). Money was in my bank account on Tuesday.
I could get used to DTS – but even my BN Cdr agrees that it’s a bit opaque to set up a trip – and thought my idea of having ops put out a template of what we should fill in was a good one. We’ll see what happens next year.
Two things: A. Epic comic, especially the rollover text.
B. I just deployed to Iraq, so I may have missed it. Have the results of the ‘stache competition been released? If so, where is it?
As it’s two weeks after submitting my end of deployment travel voucher, worth close to $5,000 I WISH we had used DTS. I have no idea what’s going on with it, all the documentation that my unit provided (other travel vouchers, etc) are not in my possession, and I can’t just “fix” what’s wrong, if something is. I have to completely redo the packet, and that just sucks.
I like DTS, now that I’ve used it a few times. I can call some guy up at state and yell at him when I don’t have orders yet, and the plane is literally sitting on the flight line waiting to be boarded. I couldn’t do that before. (Though it also helps that I’m not an E4 anymore, but still…)
Long before DTS, there was FAS. Although widespread, it never was never fully completed and essentially remained a prototype. Thus, recognizing that it was only partially complete, we referred to it as “Half FAS.”
That’s a great suggestion, and y’all can go ahead and assume they visited them, but I never use the characters in the Memorial Day comic. Because Memorial Day is about honoring real people whose sacrifices had a real impact on real families, I try to disconnect that from my little fictional world. Really though, thanks for the idea!
As someone that processes DTS for others, all I can say is that the system sucks canal water

Just saw today’s BDB. Very fitting. Makes me disappointed to be missing the Maddingly ceremonies this year.
Farva, damn you, keeping us in suspense over the FL trip… LOL!
DTS has existed long before the empire… a seething mass of vile darkness from whence all sith recieve their hatred and anger.
Yeah, I just got back from a TDY too X-)

Those pilots should check out the five-day forecast for Alderaan, available here: http://www.snorgtees.com/alderaan-5-day-forecast

Hey Farva – How about Monday’s cartoon showing the Chief and Capt making a visit to the memorials @ Elmendorf. Just seems right…
