I have many stories to share from my days as an air surveillance technician, and many of them involve the common AST practice of picking up flight meals. This will become a recurring theme, I assure you.
Did they actually call that a bailout hatch on the E-3? I know on the KC-135, which is basically the same as the E-3, they would out the normal entrance. I’m to tired to remember if the E-3 has the same style crew entrance the 135 has though.
The E-3 uses the commercial style front and back doors for boarding. The bailout chute has never, and will never be used as we don’t have chutes, but it still technically works. It also used to be fun to lock people in it. Unfortunately the frown on that now.
Thanks. I had to go into the area below the flight deck once. I guess that’s what happens if you’re thin enough to fit through the opening. Wish I could remember how many parachutes the tanker had on board. I’d have to say the 135R/T was my favorite aircraft to work on out of the 7 airframes I worked on. Now most of my work is done in A/C. That could change if I end up at a base with E-3s though.
I think the only thing that was just as bad is when they end up getting the meals wrong and everyone, if anything, holds it as a bigger grudge. Just pray the ovens work I guess.
“NO. Capt. All the flight meals seam to have a funny taste to them today…”
“Sorry sir, I have no idea how your lunch box was crushed or how that foot print got on it.”
having not flown on it yet, i have to say my greatest fear is of the bathroom in the back. Dear lord…

Surveillance? I thought the “S” stood for “Snack”?
Snacko… which is, I suspect a duty on the ground that might lead to just a bit more abuse of enlisted as mess stewards.
Airborne Snack Technician.
Arent all Airman abused for stupid crap they didn’t sign up for?
Or am I the only who sees this haha?
No you’re right. it’s what makes us bitter and jaded NCO’s later in life

And when I say they, I mean the people making the meals. Sometimes the ordering process isn’t as smooth as one would hope.
I do miss having the comforts of a bunk while I fly.
As a friend of mine refered to the boom operator on a kc135 – stewardess. This is back in the day when they had all male flight crews.
Ah, the Airborne Snack Technician.
It’s always fun being an Airman and being punished for something you didn’t know you were supposed to do.
Glad the 963d doesn’t do flight meals anymore.
When did they stop that?
Not sure as I got to the squadron in July. The 966th stopped around March or April though. The 965th still does it.
It’s not a good idea to irritate the flight crew. They control the heat…

Way to instill confidence with the rest of the crew there Capt.
Also I though this might be of interest to the rest here.

That was the first question I asked my flight instructor… although the response wasn’t the same…
